Zoroastrianism is an ancient religion that was founded by the prophet Zoroaster in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) around the 6th century BCE. It is one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions, with a history that spans over 3,000 years.
Zoroastrianism is based on the teachings of Zoroaster, who taught that there was one God, Ahura Mazda, who was the creator of the universe and the ultimate source of all good. Zoroastrians believe that Ahura Mazda is the only true god and that all other gods and deities are simply manifestations of his divine power.
In addition to Ahura Mazda, there are six other Amesha Spentas or Holy Immortals that are considered to be angelic beings that help to maintain the universe. They are:
-
Spenta Mainyu - the Holy Spirit and embodiment of Ahura Mazda's creative power
-
Vohu Manah - the Amesha Spenta of good thinking
-
Asha Vahishta - the Amesha Spenta of righteousness and truth
-
Khshathra Vairya - the Amesha Spenta of power and authority
-
Haurvatat - the Amesha Spenta of health and wholeness
-
Ameretat - the Amesha Spenta of immortality and everlasting life.
Zoroastrians believe that there is a constant battle between good and evil in the world, with humans having the free will to choose which side they align with. They believe that the ultimate goal of life is to do good deeds and live a virtuous life, which will allow the soul to ascend to the spiritual world after death.
Zoroastrianism has had a significant impact on other religions, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Some scholars believe that the concept of the afterlife and the idea of a final judgment, which are central to these religions, were influenced by Zoroastrianism.
Today, Zoroastrianism is a minority religion, with most of its followers living in India and Iran. The religion has faced persecution and discrimination in many parts of the world, but its followers continue to practice their beliefs and celebrate their rich cultural heritage.
